Function / Content

This series consists of client files relating to the Central Australia region. Individual client files were maintained on a variety of functions, including: Aboriginal people declared to be Wards; emergency assistance to single men, deserted wives or widows, and pensioners; registration of births; foster and/or adoption arrangements for child clients; guardianship of adults and children and arrangements for out of home care or institutionalisation; client complaints and/or enquiries; probation matters for child clients including pre-sentence reports and visits to juvenile prisoners held at Alice Springs Gaol; assistance to travel for medical attention; and, arrangements for State Wards from interstate relocated to the Northern Territory either to be placed in Northern Territory welfare institutions or returned to families. Client files may include copies of police statements and welfare officers' investigations relating to incidents of child abuse, family violence, neglect, and sexual assault. Many files relate to children committed to the care of the State Children's Council during the 1950s who were then transferred to welfare institutions such as the Receiving Home Darwin, or other organisations such as Retta Dixon Homes in Darwin, St Mary's Hostel in Alice Springs, Little Flower Mission (later Arltunga Mission), and Garden Point Mission on Melville Island. Some files include correspondence with Kate Cocks Memorial Babies Home in Adelaide relating to the temporary accommodation of infants, and/or arrangements for babies to be adopted in South Australia. Some files contain correspondence during the 1960s relating to children with disabilities who were sent to the Spastic Centre in Woodville, South Australia where some Northern Territory children were resident for many years. Some client files include correspondence relating to the Part Coloured Housing Scheme including complaints, enquiries, maintenance, utilities, rental arrears and eviction processes. Some
